Phytochrome in Embryos of Pinus palustris.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Phytochrome has been shown to be involved in the germination of seeds of a number of pine species as determined by the responses of these seeds to red and far-red irradiations (4, 7, 9). Nyman (7) found that even before imbibition, germination of Pinits silvestris seeds can be promoted by red irradiation. McLemore (5) found that germination of longleaf pine seed (P. palustris) can be repeatedly promoted and inhibited by short exposures to red and far-red light, after imbibition. This species has relatively large embryos which can be easily isolated. Therefore, it was of interest to see whether germination of P. palustris seeds could be affected early during imbibition by red and far-red light, and to investigate the phytochrome spectrophotometricallv.

Rehydration of Phytochrome in Imbibing Seeds of Amaranthus retroflexus L.
It is commonly recognized that light-sensitive seeds require a period of imbibition before full promotion of germination by a light stimulus can be attained. Yet little work describes the nature of these preliminary events. Of the several major limitations that may be involved, clearly the rehydration (or activation) of phytochrome and the system with which it interacts are the chief ones to co...

Why does longleaf pine have low susceptibility to southern pine beetle?
Pine forests throughout the world are subject to disturbance from tree-killing bark beetles, but pine species differ in their susceptibilities. In the southeastern United States, Pinus palustris Mill. suffers far less mortality from the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann, than do its sympatric congeners. We tested the commonly invoked hypothesis that P. palustris has relati...
متن کاملInfluence of plant-parasitic nematodes on longleaf pine seedlings.
Seedlings of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) were grown in 20-cm pots for 5 to 7 months in the greenhouse following inoculation with a high or low level of one of seven species of plant-parasitic nematodes. Belonolaimus longicaudatus and Helicotylenchus dihystera had no effect on seedling growth. High inoculum densities of Hoplolaimus galeatus and Tylenchorhynchus claytoni caused a significant ...
